About the Well Child/Tamariki Ora health checks
Your child can have 11 Well Child/Tamariki Ora health checks between birth and five years.
The health checks include:
- clinical assessment and health protection
- health education and advice
- family/whānau care and support
- the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you might have about your child’s health and development.
You’ll find more information about what happens at each check in your Well Child/Tamariki Ora Health Book.
When the checks happen
Between birth and four weeks
Four checks are provided by your midwife, GP or obstetrician:
- soon after birth
- during the first week of your baby’s life
- between 2 and 4 weeks.
Between four weeks and four years
Eight more checks are provided by your Well Child/Tamariki Ora provider, at:
- 4–6 weeks
- 8–10 weeks
- 3–4 months
- 5–7 months
- 9–12 months
- 15–18 months
- 2–3 years
- 4 years.
B4 School Check
The B4 School Check takes place when your child is four years old. It’s the final Well Child/Tamariki Ora health check.
- The B4 School Check helps make sure your child is healthy and can learn well at school.

The B4 School Check includes a free hearing and eyesight test.
