Feeding your baby when you’re HIV positive

If you have HIV, the Ministry of Health recommends you don’t breastfeed your children.

In other countries, the nutritional and health benefits of breastfeeding outweigh the risk of transmitting HIV. This isn’t the case in New Zealand, where there are safe and effective alternatives to breast milk.

If you have HIV you should be provided with specific guidance and support for the first two years of your child’s life, to ensure safe and adequate replacement feeding. Talk to your lead maternity carer or Well Child nurse about your options.
