Summary

This report is an evaluation of a demonstration site coordinated by Health Workforce New Zealand. A diabetes nurse (DN) operates with a high degree of expertise in delivering diabetes services. Being able to prescribe common medicines in a collaborative team is a natural extension of this role.

This evaluation report finds the role is:

  • safe and clinically appropriate
  • contributes to an effective diabetes specialist service
  • popular with patients, who say they are confident in the prescribing decisions
  • popular with the nurses themselves, who appreciate the extra responsibility and efficiency gains for health teams.
