Publicly funded hospital discharges

Number of hospital discharges, total population

  • In 2011/12 there were 1,082,757 publicly funded hospital discharges, an increase of 2.8 percent from 2010/11
  • Inpatient hospitalisations (681,369) were 62.9 percent of total discharges with the remaining 401,388 discharged as day cases
  • Females accounted for 56.4 percent of 2011/12 hospital inpatient discharges

Number of hospital discharges, Māori population

  • Discharges for Māori (177,789) accounted for 16.4 percent of total discharges in 2011/12
  • Māori inpatient hospitalisations (111,138) were 62.5 percent of total Māori discharges
  • Māori females accounted for 58.1 percent of total inpatient discharges for Māori in 2011/12

Publicly funded hospital discharges by age

  • Of total publicly funded discharges, children aged from 0–4 years were the largest group (143,584 or 13.3 percent of total discharges) followed by those aged 85 years and over (71,965 or 6.6 percent of total discharges)
  • Of publicly funded discharges for Māori, children aged between 0–4 years were the largest group (35,551 or 20.0 percent of total Māori discharges) followed by the 20–24 year age group at 17,015 or 9.6 percent of total Māori discharges)

Age-standardised rates for publicly funded hospital discharges

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 22,090.5 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 27,696.3 per 100,000 Māori population

Hospital cases involving injury and poisoning

Total population

  • For the total population there were 192,721 publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning in 2011/12, an increase of 2.6 percent from 2010/11
  • Males accounted for 52.5 percent of these cases

Māori population

  • There were 28,684 discharges for Māori in 2011/12 involving injury and poisoning
  • Males accounted for 56.3 percent of injury cases for Māori

Age-standardised rates for publicly funded discharges involving injury and poisoning

  • The age-standardised discharge rate for the total population was 3712.4 per 100,000 population
  • The age-standardised discharge rate for Māori was 4569.8 per 100,000 Māori population

Total numbers of publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals

  • In 2011/12 there were 1,533,233 publicly funded procedures undertaken in hospitals, an increase of 4.7 percent from 2010/11
  • Females accounted for 55.2 percent of 2011/12 procedures
  • 33.4 percent (511,495) of all procedures were undertaken as day cases
