Registering a new profession
There are 16 regulatory authorities under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003 (the Act).
The Act contains provisions enabling the scope of the Act to be extended to cover other practitioners and professions that provide health services.
The download on this page discusses these provisions and provides guidance to groups who might seek to apply for inclusion in the Act.
Current applications for registering under the Act
Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) practitioners groups have applied to the Ministry of Health to be regulated under the Health Practitioners Competence Assurance Act 2003.
In July 2011 the Minister of Health agreed to go to the next step for the application towards possible regulation with publication of the the proposal to regulate the TCM profession which outlines the reasons for regulating a profession, a brief background on the profession and invited comments on the proposal. The submissions on this proposal are being considered to advice the Minister on possible next steps for his consideration.
Any applications for registration will not currently be processed until the 2012 policy review of the Act.
