Public hospital and private surgical hospital: Applying to reconfigure and/or increase capacity

A provider is required to notify the Ministry of Health when they plan to do any of the following:

  • increase patient/client capacity
  • transfer current clinical services
  • provide a new clinical service
  • a new build
  • a combination of the above.

Use the Notification of reconfiguring services or building a new hospital form (Word, 67 KB).

The Director-General of Health must be satisfied that a reconfiguration or increase in capacity will not negatively impact on the provider’s ability to meet the standard.

The self-assessment is completed to look at the potential impact of the change. An audit may be required to be undertaken by the provider’s designated auditing agency, after completion of the work but prior to occupation of the new or reconfigured area, in order to demonstrate to the Director-General that the provider continues to meet the standard.
