Researcher/Provider Initiated Research 2008/09

The Ministry manages a small budget available each year to fund researcher/provider initiated research projects selected through a competitive process.

In 2008/09, the first year that this opportunity was offered to the sector, two projects were identified for funding:

  • Project 1: A formative investigation into the effectiveness of gambling venue exclusion processes in New Zealand
  • Project 2: A secondary analysis of two Data subsets, Youth and Asian, from the 2006/07 Gaming and Betting Activities Survey

Project 1: Formative investigation into the effectiveness of gambling venue exclusion processes in New Zealand

Summary of project/aims

The aims of this project are to:

  • review the national and international literature on venue exclusion policies and processes
  • identify the impact of self-exclusion process on problem gambling and patrons control over gambling
  • identify perceptions of the impact, effectiveness and usefulness of the current self-exclusion programmes in place at The Southern Trust venues and at the Christchurch Casino (e.g. minimum and maximum lengths of ban, contract processes, legal implications of breaching contracts, assessment by a qualified treatment provider prior to an exclusion being lifted)
  • identify differences between self-excluding and venue excluded patrons in relation to the effectiveness of exclusion processes, breach occurrence and frequency, and venue identification
  • identify perceived benefits and flaws of the current exclusion processes (from venue and patron perspectives)
  • identify how venues can more effectively implement and support exclusion processes, including effective mechanisms for informing patrons about the self-exclusion processes
  • identify methods to support and encourage venue patrons to use the self-exclusion processes.

Project 2: Secondary Analysis of two Data subsets, Youth and Asian, from the 2006/07 Gaming and Betting Activities Survey

Summary of project/aims

This project will conduct analysis of the Asian and youth subsets of the 2006/07 Gaming and Betting Activities survey to:

  • identify correlates for risk and protective factors specific to youth
  • identify within the youth sample on variables such as ethnicity, gender, NZDep, household composition, type of gambler, number of activities
  • identify correlates for risk and protective factors specific to Asian peoples
  • identify relationships within the Asian peoples sample on variables such as gender, NZDep, household composition, type of gambler, number of activities.
