Health Impact Assessment practitioner workshops

The HIA Support Unit runs workshops that help to build and maintain HIA capacity and good practice. They provide a workforce development opportunity for both new and more experienced HIA practitioners within the health and non-health sectors.

The workshops are open to a range of attendees including:

  • People who have attended previous introductory or advanced HIA/Whanau Ora HIA training who wish to further their skills in the area of HIA/Whanau HIA appraisal and reporting
  • Staff within District Health Boards, public health services, local government, Maori providers, non-governmental organisations and policy makers who are specifically tasked with leading HIA/Whanau Ora HIA development and activities
  • Other impact assessment practitioners, such as SIA, EIA, cultural impact assessment and sustainability appraisal, who are interested in learning more about the appraisal and reporting stages of an HIA/Whanau Ora HIA process.

Further HIA practitioner workshops will be held subject to demand and availability of resources.

Past workshops

November 2010: Fourth HIA Practitioner Workshop: Pre-conference workshop

The one-day workshop aimed to provide a supportive environment where successes, dilemmas and reflections (stories) were discussed, to find solutions to common HIA dilemmas and build competence and confidence in HIA practice.

February 2010: Third HIA Practitioner Workshop: Strengthening skills in HIA Appraisal and reporting

Twenty-eight people attended the third HIA practitioners workshop, which aimed to advance participants’ existing knowledge and skill in the appraisal and reporting stages of HIA and Whanau Ora HIA. It used New Zealand HIA case studies, and focused on the practical ‘how-to’ of appraisal workshops and consultation.

March 2009: Second HIA Practitioner Workshop: Evaluation of HIA

The second workshop focused on the different approaches and methods that can be applied for evaluating HIA. This workshop was attended by both HIA and evaluation practitioners and resulted in some positive discussions and tools for future HIA evaluation work in New Zealand.

August 2008: First HIA Practitioner Workshop: HIA in general.

The first workshop provided practitioners with the opportunity to learn about the four stages of an HIA process: screening, scoping, appraisal and reporting, and evaluation.
