What diagnosis code should be assigned for hoarding disorder?
Wikipedia article states in part: ‘It is not clear whether compulsive hoarding is an isolated disorder or rather a symptom of another condition, such as “obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)”.’
We’ve gone with F42.8 Other obsessive-compulsive disorders in the meantime as our Mental Health consultant wants to capture the ‘hoarding disorder’ as it is the reason for admission.
Agree with the diagnosis code assignment of F42.8 Other obsessive-compulsive disorders for the clinical documentation of ‘Hoarding Disorder’. Please note that hoarding can be a symptom of another mental health disorder such as schizophrenia. It must be documented as a disorder to assign F42.8. Free text should also be used on the code description.
Note: Currently there is no specific diagnosis code for this disorder in DSM-IV or ICD-10. However a new code for ‘Hoarding Disorder’ is being created in DSM-V and ICD-11.
